Turkey hunting is a popular spring tradition for many hunters in Kansas. The state offers abundant opportunities to bag a tom turkey, with seasoned and novice hunters alike eagerly awaiting opening day each April. But when exactly is turkey season in Kansas in 2024? Read on for a complete guide to spring turkey hunting dates, permits, and regulations in the Sunflower State.

Overview of Kansas Turkey Seasons for 2024

Kansas has both a spring and fall turkey hunting season. However, the fall season is currently suspended due to declining turkey populations. Here are the major seasons for spring 2024:

  • Youth/Disabled Season – April 1-15. 2024

  • Archery Season – April 7-15, 2024

  • Regular Season – April 16 – May 30, 2024

Spring turkey permits allow the harvest of one bearded turkey in Kansas No additional game tags will be issued for the 2024 spring season

Spring Turkey Permit Types

Several permit options exist for the spring 2024 turkey season in Kansas:

  • General Permits – Valid in Units 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 for residents and nonresidents. Can be purchased over the counter or online.

  • Unit 4 Permits – Only for residents and nonresident landowners/tenants in Unit 4. Issued through pre-season lottery draw.

  • Youth Permits – For resident hunters 15 and under. Valid statewide for $7.50.

  • Nonresident Permits – For nonresidents in Units 1-3, 5-6 through pre-season lottery draw.

Applying for Coveted Unit 4 Permits

Special rules apply for Unit 4 spring turkey permits in Kansas:

  • 375 permits total, with 200 reserved for resident landowners/tenants.

  • Must apply online by February 14, 2024. $7.50 non-refundable application fee.

  • Permits awarded by lottery with preference points.

  • Unsuccessful applicants earn a preference point for following year.

  • Permits can be delivered electronically or by mail.

Unit 4 permits are highly coveted since Unit 4 covers prime turkey habitat. Applying early online is crucial.

License Requirements

All turkey hunters in Kansas need a valid spring turkey permit for the season. A separate Kansas hunting license is required for:

  • Resident hunters ages 16-74

  • All nonresident turkey hunters

The exception is Kansas residents hunting on land they own. Review all license options and exemptions.

Legal Hunting Methods

According to Kansas regulations, legal methods for spring turkey hunting include:

  • Shotguns with #2 through #9 shot

  • Handguns using shot sizes 2-9

  • Bows including compound, recurve, and crossbows

  • Dogs and baiting turkeys are prohibited

Turkey Tagging and Check-In Requirements

Hunters must tag their harvested turkey before moving it from the site. Electronic hunters must use the Go Outdoors Kansas app to tag it immediately. Validate the carcass tag by notching month and day of kill.

The telecheck harvest reporting system must also be used within 1 day to register turkeys. Hunters can call 800-305-6681 or use the mobile app.

The spring turkey hunting season in Kansas runs from April 1 to May 30 in 2024, with separate youth, archery, and regular seasons. Be sure to apply for limited Unit 4 permits by mid-February. All hunters need required licenses and turkey tags. Carefully follow regulations for legal hunting methods and tagging. With preparation and scouting, Kansas offers a great opportunity to bag a long-bearded tom turkey.
