Sausage rolls are a beloved snack in many parts of the world. These savory pastries, enveloping a tasty sausage meat filling inside a crisp, golden pastry, are easy to prepare ahead of time and enjoy later. But when it comes time to reheat your leftover sausage rolls, you want to make sure they come out just as delicious as when they were freshly baked.
Using an air fryer is one of the best ways to reheat sausage rolls so that they have a hot, crispy pastry and piping hot filling. Air fryers use super heated air to quickly and evenly reheat foods, mimicking deep frying results but without all the excess oil. Follow this simple air fryer method for reheating sausage rolls to crispy, mouthwatering perfection.
Why Reheat Sausage Rolls in an Air Fryer?
Air fryers have revolutionized the way we can reheat leftovers at home. These compact countertop convection ovens use a rapid air circulation system to surround food with hot air, heating up leftovers quickly and evenly. Air fryers produce far better results than traditional ovens or microwaves when reheating pastry foods like sausage rolls.
Here are some of the benefits of using an air fryer
-
Even heating – The hot air flow in an air fryer evenly reheats the pastry and filling without creating cold spots. This prevents overcooking some areas or undercooking others.
-
Crispier pastry – The dry heat from an air fryer will revive and recrisp the pastry casing on sausage rolls as they reheat Ovens and microwaves often make the pastry soggy
-
Cooks faster – Air fryers preheat and reheat food very rapidly, so your sausage rolls will be piping hot and ready to eat in just minutes.
-
Doesn’t dry out filling – The air fryer doesn’t dry out the sausage meat inside thanks to the even, quick cooking.
-
Adds no extra oil – Unlike deep frying, air fryers don’t require any added oil to reheat foods. This makes them much healthier than deep frying.
How to Reheat Sausage Rolls to Perfection in an Air Fryer
Reheating sausage rolls in an air fryer is very simple and takes just a few minutes. Follow these steps for hot, delicious sausage rolls straight from your air fryer:
Ingredients
- Leftover uncooked sausage rolls
Equipment
- Air fryer
- Baking sheet or air fryer insert
Directions
-
Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Remove any inserts or trays before preheating. Allow 3-5 minutes for the air fryer to fully preheat.
-
Arrange sausage rolls in the basket, spaced apart to allow air circulation. Lay the sausage rolls on the air fryer basket or baking insert, leaving about 1/2 inch space around each one. This promotes even cooking.
-
Reheat for about 5-8 minutes. Cooking time will vary based on amount and size of rolls. Small sausage rolls may take only 5 minutes, while larger ones may need up to 8 minutes.
-
Check that the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) before serving. Insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of a sausage roll. It should reach safe eating temperature.
-
Enjoy immediately for maximum crispness and warmth! Sausage rolls are best eaten straight from the air fryer.
Tips for Reheating Sausage Rolls
-
Let excess oil drain off before reheating in air fryer if sausage rolls were pre-cooked in oil.
-
Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. Too many rolls prevents proper air circulation.
-
Brush tops with butter after reheating for an extra shiny, golden glaze.
-
Slice larger sausage rolls in half so insides heat through.
-
Add a dollop of mustard or ketchup for even more flavor!
-
Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours and reheat within 3-4 days for food safety.

How long to cook sausage rolls for in an air fryer?
I use 450g (1lb) of pork sausage meat and 320g of ready-rolled puff pastry for the recipe below.
Out of this you can choose how big to cut your sausage rolls. Since the sausage roll’s thickness stays the same but its length changes, all of the following sizes need 15 minutes to cook:
- 4 extra-large sausage rolls, like these veggie sausage rolls
- 6 large sausage rolls
- 12 medium-sized sausage rolls, like these biscuit-based sausage rolls
- 16 little sausage rolls, like these cheese
Once the thickness changes, so does the cooking time. I’ve tested extensively and the thinner kind requires only a 10 minute cooking time.
- 36 small sausage rolls, like these sausage rolls for a party
I haven’t put out any recipes for thick, overstuffed sausage rolls yet because I don’t always like the ratio of meat to pastry. This kind will definitely take longer to cook and would quite likely require a slightly lower temperature too.
