The holidays are fast approaching, which means it’s almost time for one of El Paso’s most beloved traditions – the YMCA Turkey Trot! This year marks the 48th annual running of this popular Thanksgiving Day event As someone whose participated in the Turkey Trot many times over the years, I’m excited to share everything you need to know to join in on the fun this November
An El Paso Tradition Since 1977
The YMCA Turkey Trot first kicked off back in 1977, making 2024 the 48th consecutive year for the race Over nearly five decades, this Thanksgiving Day run has become a cherished ritual for El Paso families and runners. Rain or shine, each year thousands of participants across all ages turn out to run, jog, or walk the race’s 5K and 1 mile courses.

Your 2024 Turkey Trot Options
The Turkey Trot offers competitive runners and casual participants alike the chance to take part in the fun. Here’s a rundown of what’s on the agenda for the 48th annual event on November 28, 2024:

5K Run – The Turkey Trot 5K features a fast, scenic course that winding through downtown El Paso. The run starts at 7 AM sharp at the corner of Virginia and Montana.

1 Mile Walk – If 5K seems like a bit much, join the 1 mile walk instead! It follows a similar course as the 5K at a more leisurely pace.

Turkey Trot Sleep In – Not a morning person? Sign up for the Sleep In option to receive a medal, bib, and other goodies without having to drag yourself out of bed before sunrise.

Double Feather Dash – Can’t decide between resting up or running the 1 miler? The Double Feather lets you do both!
Registration Details
General registration for the Turkey Trot 5K and 1 mile walk is now open online. Here’s a breakdown of the registration timeline:
- Now through September 2, 2024: $35
- September 3 to November 17: $49
- November 18 to 27: $69
- Day of Race, November 28: $79
Registration deadlines for the Sleep In and Double Feather options are a bit earlier, so don’t delay in signing up! Packet pickup will take place November 23-27 at the Westside YMCA, or morning of the race.
Pro tip: Register sooner rather than later to avoid price increases and sell outs! The Turkey Trot caps participant numbers for safety.
Race Day Tips and Info
If you’re joining us bright and early on Thanksgiving morning, here are some tips to make your Turkey Trot experience top-notch:

Arrive Early – Give yourself extra time to park, pick up your bib, warmup, and get situated at the start line. Expect crowds and plan ahead.

Dress for the Weather – November in El Paso can be warm or chilly. Check the forecast and dress in light layers you can adjust.

Bring ID and Cash – Identification and cash can help smooth out any registration snafus race morning. Plus, vendors are cash only.

Fuel Up and Hydrate – Don’t run on an empty stomach – eat a light prerun meal. Stay hydrated in the days leading up to the race.

Thanksgiving Trot Sleep in: If you want to support our event but don’t want to get up early to run, you can sign up for the Turkey Trot Sleep In event. You will get a Turkey Trot pillow case, a Turkey Trot number bib, and a Turkey Trot medal for $35. *Day of registration not available.
What is the Double Feather Dash? This is for people who can’t decide whether to sleep in or do the 1-mile fun walk, or if their family is split up. It costs $100 and comes with two Turkey Trot pillowcases, two Turkey Trot shirts, two medals, and two walker bibs. *Day of registration not available.
You can only register, race week, Monday – Wednesday from 8 a. m. – 6 p. m. at Westside YMCA or Race morning from 6 – 7 a. m. onsite.
