Why Make Turkey Sliders in the Oven?

Baking turkey sliders in the oven has some major advantages

  • It’s fast and hands-off Simply assemble, pop in the oven, and bake

  • You can make a large batch to feed a crowd. I usually bake 12 sliders at once.

  • The oven heat circulates evenly for uniform cooking. No burnt or raw spots.

  • It lightly toasts the bread and melts the cheese perfectly in about 15 minutes.

  • Compared to grilling, the oven keeps the turkey and cheese moist.

Ingredients Needed

Part of what makes these turkey sliders so easy is that they use common ingredients you likely already have:

  • Slider buns: Soft dinner rolls, Hawaiian rolls, or mini buns work best.

  • Deli turkey: Thin sliced is ideal, or use leftover roasted turkey.

  • Cheese: Cheddar, Swiss, provolone, and Havarti are all great melty choices.

  • Condiments: Mayo, mustard, ketchup, or even cranberry sauce.

  • Veggies: Lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, etc.

  • Glaze (optional): Honey, melted butter, and mustard make a nice topping.

Step-By-Step Method

Follow these simple steps for baking tasty turkey sliders in your oven at home:

1. Prepare the Ingredients

Slice the turkey and cheese into thin pieces. Separate the slider buns. Make any glazes or spreads you want. Chop any toppings.

2. Assemble the Sliders

Spread condiments on the bun bottoms. Layer on turkey and cheese. Add lettuce, tomato, etc. Top with the bun tops.

3. Arrange on a Baking Sheet

Place assembled sliders on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil.

4. Brush with Glaze (Optional)

For extra flavor, generously brush the bun tops with a honey mustard glaze.

5. Bake at 350°F for 15-18 Minutes

Bake until the cheese melts and the rolls are lightly toasted.

6. Let Cool and Serve

Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving warm.

It really is that easy. In less than 30 minutes, you can have delicious turkey sliders hot and ready to eat.

Pro Tips for the Best Sliders

Here are some of my best tips for taking your oven-baked turkey sliders to the next level:

  • Flavor the mayo with spices, herbs, or pesto for a flavor burst.

  • Use soft rolls like Hawaiian rolls for the best tender-crisp texture.

  • Load on toppings – the more the better! Veggies, cheese, sauces. Go wild.

  • Keep them mini – regular size buns are too big and messy.

  • Brush with flavored butter – like garlic or chili lime for extra flavor.

  • Add bacon for irresistible crunch and saltiness.

  • Toast the buns first for an extra crispy exterior.

  • Use two baking sheets so the sliders aren’t crowded.

Creative Topping Combinations

One of my favorite parts about making turkey sliders is coming up with fun topping ideas. Here are some of my favorites:

Classic

Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mustard, mayo

BBQ

Cheddar, crispy onions, barbecue sauce

Buffalo

Pepper jack, hot sauce, blue cheese

Greek

Feta, red onion, olives, tzatziki

Caprese

Fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil, balsamic

Southwest

Pepper jack, avocado, pico de gallo

Don’t be afraid to get creative and make these turkey sliders your own! The possibilities are endless.

Using Leftover Turkey

Leftover roasted or smoked turkey breast is amazing in these sliders. Here are some tips:

  • Chop or shred the turkey into small pieces for quick, even heating.

  • Mix with olive oil and seasoning to prevent dry meat.

  • Spread cranberry sauce or gravy on the buns for moisture.

  • Choose extra melty cheese like Havarti or smoked gouda.

  • Add crispy fried onions for texture.

Reheating and Storing Leftovers

To save any uneaten turkey sliders:

  • Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

  • Reheat in the oven at 325°F for 10 minutes, covered in foil.

  • You can also microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

troubleshooting & testing notes

My filling is falling out. This is somewhat inevitable and part of the beauty of this recipe. But, to keep it inside, keep the filling inside the edge of the rolls by about ½”-1”.

I tried baking the turkey and here’s what happened. Baking the turkey is a great option but it ends up being a bit dry. You also either need to bake it in a sheet tray and try and lift the whole square out or form patties which takes time.

how to store & make it ahead

To store these in the fridge, simply cover and store in an airtight container for up to 5 days. They will start to get a bit soggy after day 2 but still tasty!

You can definitely freeze these! Just bake them and let them cool completely, then cover them with plastic wrap and foil (double layer). Freezer for up to 3 months and reheat directly from frozen in the oven.

To make this dish ahead of time, it depends on how long in advance you need them. Either assemble it up to 1 day in advance and bake right before serving or make the components up to 3 days in advance and assemble and bake when ready.

To reheat these, pop them in the oven covered to reheat for 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees.

  • Cheese barrier:
Layer cheese first on the toasted bun, allowing it to act as a barrier between the bread and wetter ingredients like sauce or meat.

  • Choose appropriate cheese:
Opt for low-moisture cheeses like mozzarella instead of fresh mozzarella to minimize added moisture.
