When I was small, I went abroad with my family. We were given cookies to eat on the plane, but we didn’t know that they had lard in them (made from pig fat). As soon as my mother found out, she forbade us from eating them anymore. I don’t think we washed our hands or mouths with water and earth six times, once with plain water and once with water mixed with earth, as the Prophet said Muslims should do whenever they come into contact with pigs or anything made from pigs. A few years later, again when I was abroad, I accidentally ate pork. Again, I did not wash my mouth using water mixed with earth. Why do I ask? These two events happened a few years ago, and there are no smell, taste, or color remnants of the pork we ate on our hands or in our mouths. Do we still need to clean them? I’m afraid that because of these two events a long time ago, Allah won’t accept any of our prayers. Please help me in clarifying this matter.
Pork consumption is strictly prohibited in Islam. But what happens if a Muslim knowingly and intentionally eats pork despite understanding it’s haram (forbidden)? Does it nullify their faith or have spiritual implications? Let’s explore the Islamic perspective on deliberately eating pork
Why Pork is Haram in Islam
Islam prohibits consumption of pork and pork products. Pigs are considered najis (filthy) in Islamic law.
There are a few reasons pork is haram:
- Pigs eat fecal matter making their meat unsanitary.
- Pork may contain parasites harmful to human health.
- Pigs are omnivores with similar anatomy to humans, making pork unnatural for consumption compared to herbivores like cows or sheep.
- Allah explicitly prohibits pork in the Quran: “Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, the flesh of swine…” (5:3).
So Muslims must avoid pork and products containing pork derivatives like gelatin But what if a Muslim intentionally defies this?
Unintentional Ingestion of Pork
If a Muslim mistakenly or accidentally consumes pork, there is no sin. Allah forgives unintentional mistakes as He is Most Merciful.
For example, if someone eats a pie not knowing the crust contains lard, they’ve committed no wrong. Similarly, if a Muslim travels to a country where pork broth is common in soups and ingests some pork unknowingly, Allah does not punish or condemn them.
However, once a Muslim becomes aware of the pork content, they must immediately stop eating it. They should also perform ablution rituals like washing the mouth out if the pork was directly ingested.
Deliberately Eating Pork When You Know It’s Haram
Intentionally and continuously eating pork while understanding it’s haram is considerably more serious. Knowingly indulging in clear violations of Islamic law can lead to detrimental spiritual consequences.
Though Allah is ready to forgive, deliberately disobeying His commands displays arrogance, defiance and a weak faith. It risks becoming an apathetic stance towards halal and haram itself.
Regularly consuming pork intentionally indicates one is ignoring Islamic ethics and values. It leads believers away from taqwa (God consciousness) which is vital for spiritual growth.
Additionally, habitually engaging in haram acts can desensitize one’s inherent sense of right and wrong. It opens doors to further misguidance and corruption of the heart.
While an occasional sin out of human weakness may be forgivable through repentance, determined disobedience and transgression of Allah’s limits hardens the heart and distances one from Him.
Effects on Validity of Prayer and Worship
As for whether consuming pork invalidates prayer, the answer is no, it does not. Prayer itself remains valid and is not nullified solely due to eating pork.
However, intentionally eating haram food on a regular basis does begin to impact the quality of one’s worship. It erodes sincerity and promotes hypocrisy by disregarding Allah’s commands.
While prayer remains valid externally, the internal spirit of humility and devotion starts becoming corrupted when one engages in brazen sins like deliberately eating pork frequently.
Seeking Repentance Through Tawbah
The good news is Allah is ready to accept sincere repentance from anyone who seeks forgiveness. No matter how grave the sin, the door of tawbah (repentance) is open.
If a Muslim realizes the evil of intentionally eating pork, they must immediately cease and repent. A heartfelt tawbah renews faith and reconciles the relationship between servant and Lord.
Allah promises He will wipe away bad deeds for those who repent: “And those who, when they commit immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins – and who forgives sins except Allah? – and they do not persist in what they have done while they know.” (3:135)
Through heartfelt tawbah and correcting one’s relationship with Allah, even determined acts of disobedience like intentionally consuming pork can be wiped away.
The Wisdom Behind the Prohibition
When analyzing Islamic prohibitions, it is also important to reflect on the inherent wisdom behind them. Understanding the deeper spiritual significance helps believers avoid and repent from haram acts.
In the case of pork, wisdom behind its prohibition includes:
- Training self-restraint and willpower to obey Allah’s laws
- Avoiding spiritual corruption and impurity from consuming filthy animals
- Safeguarding health from parasites and diseases pork may transmit
- Heeding the advice of the Creator who knows best what is beneficial and harmful for humanity
Contemplating this wisdom reminds Muslims to uphold Allah’s commands for their ultimate good, both spiritual and physical.
Balancing Hope and Fear of Allah
In conclusion, deliberately eating pork when one knows it’s haram jeopardizes spiritual purity and distances a believer from Allah. But the door of repentance through tawbah is always open.
Muslims must maintain hope in Allah’s mercy while retaining a cautious fear of His punishment. Striking the right balance develops true taqwa.
While accidental ingestion of pork bears no sin, intentional and continuous consumption builds callousness towards halal and haram. It should be avoided and repented from if it occurs.
Through sound knowledge of haram foods, self-restraint, and readiness to turn back in tawbah, Muslims can uphold the prohibition against pork while becoming closer to Allah.
How to cleanse after eating pork
When it comes to getting rid of pig-related impurities, some scholars say that you should wash your body seven times, with earth the seventh time, just like dogs.
But the correct view is that pig-related impurity should be washed only once. In his commentary on Muslim (Sharh Muslim), Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote, “Most of the scholars were of the view that pig-related impurity does not have to be washed seven times.” This is the view of al-Shafi’i, and it has the strongest evidence. ”.
It was Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymein who said in al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 1/495, that the jurists (may Allah have mercy on them) compared pig-related impurity to dog-related impurity. This is because pigs are dirtier than dogs, so the ruling should apply even more.
In the Quran, pigs are mentioned, and they were around when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). However, there is no report that compares them to dogs. Being dirty from pigs is the same as being dirty from anything else, so there’s no need to wash seven times, with dust or dirt on one of the times. ”.
When washing other kinds of impurities, the right way to think about it is that any method that gets rid of the impurity is enough, and there is no set number of times it needs to be washed.
You don’t need to wash any part of your bodies now, and it doesn’t affect your prayers, no matter what the right view is on how to clean yourself after touching pigs.
And Allah knows best.
