Grilling a pork sirloin roast may seem intimidating but it’s actually quite easy and rewarding! A beautifully grilled pork roast makes for an impressive centerpiece at a backyard barbecue or summer dinner party. With a few simple techniques, you can achieve a tender juicy, and flavorful grilled pork sirloin roast.
Benefits of Grilling Pork Sirloin Roast
There are several advantages to grilling a pork sirloin roast rather than other cooking methods:
-
Enhanced flavor – The high heat of the grill sears the outside of the meat, creating a delicious browned and caramelized crust that adds tons of flavor The smoky aroma from the grill permeates the pork, taking it to the next level
-
Tender and juicy – Grilling is a fast, hot cooking method that helps keep the pork sirloin roast tender and juicy. The high heat cooks the meat efficiently while retaining natural moisture.
-
Versatile – Grilled pork sirloin roast works for any occasion. Slice it for sandwiches, serve it with your favorite grilled veggies, turn leftovers into tacos – the possibilities are endless!
-
Healthy – Pork today is much leaner than it used to be. Grilling brings out the natural flavors without needing to add a lot of fat or oil. It’s a healthier cooking method than frying.
Choosing the Right Roast
When selecting a pork sirloin roast for grilling, keep these tips in mind:
-
Weight – Aim for a 2-3 pound roast, ideal for feeding 4-6 people. Go bigger for a crowd. Smaller roasts can dry out.
-
Appearance – Look for a roast that is evenly shaped and trimmed, with some fat marbling throughout for flavor and moisture.
-
Label – Check for labels like “Pork Sirloin Roast” or “Center Cut Pork Roast”. Avoid roasts labeled “loin” which come from a different area.
-
Marinade optional – Pork sirloin benefits from a simple marinade but doesn’t require one. Consider marinating if the meat seems lean.
Grilling Prep Steps
Preparing the pork sirloin roast for grilling takes just a few easy steps:
-
Trim – Use a sharp knife to trim off any excess fat or silver skin. Leave a thin layer of fat to help keep the meat moist.
-
Season – For optimal flavor, coat all sides of the roast liberally with a dry rub or seasoning. Try garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, oregano, salt and pepper.
-
Bring to room temp – Take roast out of fridge at least 30 minutes before grilling so it cooks more evenly.
-
Oil the grill – Right before grilling, brush the grill grates with oil or spray to prevent sticking. Heat grill to medium-high heat.
-
Get organized – Have tongs, spatula, instant read thermometer, and oven mitts ready before placing roast on grill.
Grilling Methods
There are two easy methods for grilling a juicy pork sirloin roast. Choose whichever fits your grill setup best:
Two-Zone Direct/Indirect Grilling
This method uses both direct and indirect heat by setting up two temperature zones on your grill.
-
Sear roast over direct high heat on one side of the grill, 4-5 minutes per side.
-
Move roast to indirect heat on the other side. Close grill lid.
-
Cook until internal temp reaches 145°F, about 1-1 1/2 hours. Check periodically.
-
Remove roast, tent with foil, rest 10-15 minutes before slicing.
Reverse Sear Grilling
With this method, you bake the roast first then sear it briefly on the grill.
-
Preheat oven to 275°F. Season roast and place on a wire rack set inside a sheet pan.
-
Roast in oven until internal temp reaches 135°F, about 1-1 1/4 hours.
-
Heat grill to high heat. Sear roast 4-5 minutes per side just until browned.
-
Remove roast, tent with foil, rest 10-15 minutes before slicing.
Doneness Tips
-
Always use an instant read thermometer to check doneness rather than relying on time.
-
Remove roast from grill when internal temp reaches 145°F for juicy, tender pork. Temperature will rise 5-10 degrees during resting time.
-
If using a marinade, boil it before basting roast to eliminate bacteria risk. Discard leftovers.
Flavorful Finishing Touches
Once rested, your perfectly grilled pork sirloin roast is ready to serve. Consider these flavorful finishing touches:
-
Carve into slices across the grain for most tenderness.
-
Make a pan sauce from the grill drippings while roast rests. Whisk in chicken broth, apple cider vinegar or wine, mustard, garlic.
-
Splash with apple cider vinegar just before serving for a bright contrast to the rich pork.
-
Toss arugula or watercress with sliced pork, shaved parmesan, lemon vinaigrette for a complete meal.
-
Sauté sliced pork with bell peppers and onions for quick fajitas or tacos with all the fixings.
-
Stuff into ciabatta with grilled veggies and pesto mayo for hearty sandwiches.
-
Cube and add to a salad with mixed greens, dried cranberries, feta and toasted nuts.
So go ahead – fire up that grill and impress your family with a mouthwatering grilled pork sirloin roast! Proper preparation and monitoring temperature are the keys to success. Follow these tips for juicy, tender and flavorful results every time. Grilling truly brings out the best in pork.
Tips for Perfect Grilled Pork Tenderloin
- Prep the grill. Make sure your grill is screaming hot before cooking. Before making the two heat zones, I heat mine to between 450 and 500 degrees.
- Keep the lid closed. That’s really important! Close the grill lid every time you flip the pork tenderloin. The direct heat side of the grill works with the indirect heat side to make the grill feel like an oven. If the lid stays open, you’ll lose all your heat.
- Use a digital thermometer. We love this digital thermometer and have used the same one for years, even though it’s a bit pricey. It’s really held up and is incredibly accurate.
- Let the meat rest. Another great tip for grilling pork tenderloin: let the meat rest for at least 10 minutes before cutting it. If you don’t, the juices will run out and the pork will be dry.
I like to slice the grilled pork into 1/2″ thick slices and truly they’re fork-tender. If we’re making pork sandwiches, I’ll slice the tenderloin into really thin slices then pile them onto buns. No matter what, this recipe will work every time. Try it once, and you’ll make it over and over again!
Pair it with The Pasta Salad Ever
First, remove any silver skin or membranes from a 1-1/2-pound pork tenderloin. Next, coat the meat with extra virgin olive oil or vegetable oil and season it as you like.
You can use any seasonings you like, but I like to use my own homemade seasoned salt, which has pepper, garlic and onion powders, salt, paprika, and salt.
