Sloppy Joes for a crowd. This is a recipe from our old Church cookbook for Sloppy Joes to serve a large group. This recipe from the book is titled Sloppy Joes for 60. If you want to make a lot of Sloppy Joes for your next party, this has the recipe you need. Let’s take a look.
Sloppy joes are a classic American sandwich that have been popular for decades. They feature a saucy seasoned ground beef mixture served warm on hamburger buns. But one question that often comes up when making sloppy joes is how much ground beef you need per person. While the exact amount can vary based on preferences there are some general guidelines to ensure you make enough for everyone.
The Typical Amount of Ground Beef Per Sloppy Joe
In most sloppy joe recipes, the standard amount of ground beef per sandwich is around 3 ounces. This provides a good meaty filling without overstuffing the bun. Many recipes that serve 4-6 people call for about 1 pound of ground beef. That divides up into 3-ounce portions nicely.
So if you want a starting point, plan on 3 ounces or around 1/4 pound of ground beef per sloppy joe. But feel free to adjust that amount as needed. Some people may prefer a little more or less meat in their sandwich. The good news is sloppy joes are pretty flexible and customizable!
Factors That Can Affect the Ideal Amount
While 3 ounces per sandwich is a common benchmark, there are a few factors that can change up the ideal amount of ground beef needed:
-
Bun size – If you are using larger hamburger buns, you may want to go with 4 ounces of meat per sandwich. Smaller slider-style buns may only need 2 ounces of ground beef. The amount can be tweaked based on the proportion of meat to bun you want.
-
How saucy you like them – Some people like sloppy joes that are swimming in sauce, while others prefer a meatier sandwich. If you want a saucier sloppy joe, you may be able to get away with slightly less beef. For a beefier sandwich, bump the amount up an ounce or two.
-
Personal preferences – Some people simply like more meat in their sandwiches than others. If you’re serving a group, consider their preferences and adjust the ground beef quantities accordingly. An all-meat lover may want 4 ounces in their sloppy joe while a lighter eater may be happy with 2.
-
Side dishes – If serving sloppy joes as the main entree with minimal sides, you may want to be on the more generous side with the meat. If they are being served alongside a full spread of sides, slightly smaller sloppy joes may suffice.
Helpful Tips for Calculating Amounts
Here are some tips for easily calculating how much ground beef you need for your desired number of sloppy joe sandwiches:
-
Look at the total number of sandwiches you want to make and multiply it by 3 ounces. For example, for 8 sandwiches you would need 8 x 3 ounces = 24 ounces or 1.5 pounds of ground beef.
-
Figure about 0.2 pounds of ground beef per person if serving sloppy joes as a main meal. For 4 people that would be 0.2 x 4 = 0.8 pounds or about 12.8 ounces of ground beef.
-
A pound of ground beef will make about 4 average-sized sloppy joe sandwiches. So for a crowd, just estimate how many pounds you need based on the number of sandwiches desired.
-
Buy a little extra – it’s better to have a bit too much than not enough. Leftovers can be used for tacos or casseroles. Or just freeze extra meat mixture for quick future sloppy joes.

How To Make Sloppy Joes for 60
Once you’re done chopping the onions and celery, this recipe is very easy to throw together.
- Step 1: Brown the ground beef. Get the biggest frying pan you can and brown the hamburger meat three times. When the first batch is about halfway done browning, add a third of the onion, a third of the celery, and a third of the flour. After the meat is browned, move the mixture to a large soup pot and do it again two more times.
- Step 2: Use an 8 quart soup pot. I’ve used a 6-quart, and it works, but it’s a little small.
- Step 3: Put everything in the big soup pot. Then add the rest of the ingredients and let it cook for at least 30 minutes. If the mix seems dry or needs a flavor boost, I add a little of your favorite barbecue sauce from a bottle.
It’s important to read the notes on the recipe card below. Depending on how much is served per bun, this recipe can make 50 Sloppy Joes if you use 1/2 cup servings per bun, or 60 Sloppy Joes if you use 1/3 cup servings per bun. And then there’s always that Sloppy Joe Sliders equasion.
