Choosing the Best Cut for Grilling
The first step to grilling an amazing pork roast is selecting the right cut of meat. Here are some of the most popular options:
-
Pork loin – This lean and tender cut has a mild flavor. It can dry out easily, so take care not to overcook it.
-
Pork shoulder – Also called pork butt, this is a flavorful and inexpensive option It has more fat to keep it moist during grilling.
-
Pork tenderloin – Extremely tender with a delicate flavor. Be careful not to overcook or it will get tough.
-
Bone-in pork roast – Leaving the bone in keeps the meat juicy and adds flavor. Allow more time for cooking bone-in cuts.
For best results, choose a roast that is 1.5 to 3 pounds. Anything larger may not cook evenly on the grill. Plan for about half a pound of pork per person.
Prepping the Roast for the Grill
Proper prep ensures your pork roast cooks evenly and absorbs plenty of flavor. Here’s how to get your roast grill-ready:
-
Trim excess fat – This prevents flare-ups on the grill. Leave about 1⁄4 inch of fat to keep the meat moist.
-
Season generously – Coat all sides with seasoning like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
-
Marinate overnight – Soak the roast in a marinade to infuse it with tons of flavor.
-
Bring to room temp – Take the roast out of the fridge 30 minutes before grilling so it cooks more evenly.
-
Pat dry – Blot the roast with paper towels before grilling to prevent sticking.
Setting Up the Gas Grill
Grilling pork roast requires both direct and indirect heat. Here are some tips for setting up your gas grill:
-
Preheat on high – Crank up all burners on high for 10-15 minutes before placing the roast on the grill.
-
Create indirect heat – Turn off the burners on one side of the grill to establish an indirect heating zone.
-
Lightly oil the grates – Use a grill brush to coat the grates with a thin layer of vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
-
Use a drip pan – Place a disposable foil pan under the indirect zone to catch drippings and prevent flare-ups.
Grilling Time and Temp for Pork Roast
The cooking time for pork roast on a gas grill depends on the size and thickness. Here are general guidelines:
- 1.5 lb roast – 60 to 75 minutes
- 2 lb roast – 75 to 90 minutes
- 3 lb roast – 90 to 120 minutes
Aim to grill the pork at a consistent temperature between 350-400°F. This allows the outside to get nicely browned while keeping the inside juicy.
Use an instant-read thermometer to check for doneness, not a timer. Pork should reach 145°F for medium or 160°F for well done.
Step-by-Step Guide to Grilling Pork Roast
Follow these simple steps for perfect pork roast on your gas grill every time:
-
Sear over direct heat – Place the seasoned roast over direct high heat and sear for 5-7 minutes per side to get a nice brown crust.

-
Flip halfway – Turn the roast halfway through cooking for even browning and cooking.
-
Baste with sauce – Glaze the pork with barbecue sauce during the last 10-15 minutes of grilling.
-
Let rest before slicing – Allow the roast to rest for 10-15 minutes before carving so juices can redistribute.
-
Slice against the grain – Cut the pork across the grain into slices for tenderness.
Handy Pork Roast Grilling Tips

Resist the urge to constantly flip the roast. Turn it only once or twice during grilling.

Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part without touching bone to get an accurate reading.

If the edges look done but center is still undercooked, loosely tent foil over the ends to prevent overcooking.
-
For extra smoky flavor, add wood chips to the gas grill by wrapping them in foil and poking holes.

The Secret to Perfect Grilled Pork Tenderloin
Are you ready for this?! The secret to achieving juicy, perfectly-grilled pork tenderloin is two zone grilling. Once your grill is hot, move the hot coals to one side if you’re using a charcoal grill and turn half of the burners down to low if you’re using a gas grill. This will make a side with direct heat and a side with indirect heat.
First, sear the pork tenderloin’s outside on the grill’s direct heat side. Then, move it to the grill’s indirect heat side to finish cooking.
That’s it! I’ll show you how below. 🙂
Pair it with The Pasta Salad Ever
First, remove any silver skin or membranes from a 1-1/2-pound pork tenderloin. Next, coat the meat with extra virgin olive oil or vegetable oil and season it as you like.
