Wild Turkey Rare Breed is one of the most iconic barrel proof bourbons on the market. Released annually since the early 1990s, Rare Breed has developed a cult following among bourbon enthusiasts. The 2023 edition promises to be another standout release. As a long-time fan of Rare Breed, I’m excited to take a deep dive on what makes this bourbon so special and what we can expect from the 2023 release.
An Overview of Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Rare Breed starts with a blend of 6-, 8-, and 12-year-old bourbons distilled at Wild Turkey in Lawrenceburg Kentucky. No water is added before bottling resulting in a barrel proof bourbon that typically ranges from 108-112 proof. The lack of dilution allows the rich, intense flavors permeate your palate.
Despite its high proof, Rare Breed maintains an incredible balance. The older bourbons lend warmth and maturity, while the younger ones provide a spicy kick. It’s a complex, yet approachable barrel proof bourbon that can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed into cocktails.
Rare Breed has received numerous accolades over the years It’s widely considered one of the best readily available cask-strength bourbons The rich flavors and creamy mouthfeel make it a whiskey lover’s dream,
Why Wild Turkey Rare Breed 2023 Will Be Special
The 2023 edition of Rare Breed promises to be one of the most unique and highly-anticipated releases yet for several reasons:
1. New Mash Bill
In 2021, Wild Turkey introduced a new mash bill for the first time in decades. This new mash bill has a higher rye content (13%) compared to the previous one (11%). Early reviews indicate the extra rye provides a spicier, more robust flavor profile.
The 2023 Rare Breed will be the first edition fully comprised of the new mash bill. I’m thrilled to experience how the higher rye mash bill impacts the flavor of Rare Breed. Given Rare Breed’s popularity, this will introduce the new mash bill to many bourbon drinkers.
2. Older Bourbons Than Prior Releases
Eddie Russell, Wild Turkey’s current Master Distiller, announced that this year’s Rare Breed will include bourbons aged up to 16 years – older than any previous edition. The extra maturation should provide richer, more oak-driven flavors.
As a fan of extra-aged bourbons, I’m looking forward to tasting how these older selections influence the overall flavor profile. This promises to be an incredibly special, unique release of Rare Breed.
3. Lower Proof Compared to Recent Years
The last few Rare Breed releases have been over 112 proof. But early indications are that this year’s edition will be bottled around 108-110 proof.
The lower proof point should allow more nuanced flavors to shine through. Don’t get me wrong, I love a barrel proof whiskey. But a few points lower proof can sometimes provide a more composed, balanced drinking experience. I’m excited to see how this impacts the 2023 Rare Breed compared to recent editions.
What to Expect Flavor-Wise from Rare Breed 2023
Based on the details above, what can we expect from Rare Breed 2023 in terms of flavors? Here are my predictions:
-
More rye spice – The new mash bill with higher rye will definitely boost peppery notes. Expect a spicier, bolder flavor profile.
-
Rich, oak-driven flavors – The older bourbons matured up to 16 years should lend deeper caramel, vanilla, dried fruit and oak notes. This will be a complex, multi-layered whiskey.
-
More balance and approachability – The slightly lower proof will allow the flavors to shine through without being overpowered. I expect an incredibly tasty, yet easy to sip barrel proofer.
Of course, these are just my best guesses based on early details. We’ll have to wait for the official 2023 release to see how my predictions hold up. But I’m confident Rare Breed will deliver an amazing bourbon experience this year.
Why I’m So Excited for Rare Breed 2023
As you can probably tell, I’m incredibly excited about this year’s Rare Breed release. Wild Turkey has crafted something special for 2023. Here’s a quick recap of why I’m so eager to get my hands on a bottle:
- It’s the first Rare Breed with the new, higher rye mash bill
- It includes the oldest bourbons ever used in Rare Breed
- The lower proof should provide exceptional balance and drinkability
Rare Breed has always overdelivered on flavor, especially considering its affordable price point. The 2023 edition sounds like it will take things to another level.
This release checks all the boxes for me – high proof, aged bourbon, new mash bill, and Wild Turkey’s signature flavor profile. I sincerely believe the 2023 Rare Breed has the potential to be one of the best releases yet. I can’t wait to do a side-by-side tasting with previous editions.
As soon as Rare Breed 2023 hits shelves, I’ll be rushing out to pick up a few bottles. Here’s hoping I can find it at MSRP! If you’re a fellow Rare Breed fan, make sure to grab a bottle of the new release before they disappear. I have a feeling this will be one of the most sought-after Wild Turkey expressions in years.
