Turkey trots have become a beloved Thanksgiving tradition for millions of Americans. These fun community runs offer a chance to burn some calories before the big feast while raising money for charity. But if you’ve never participated in one of these races before, you may be wondering – how much does it cost to join a turkey trot?
The fees for turkey trots can range quite a bit, but are generally very affordable. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
Entry Fees
The majority of turkey trots charge an entry fee in the $25 to $40 range This typically includes your race bib, timing chip if the event is chipped timed, finisher’s medal, and a long sleeve tech shirt or other swag item. Most races offer discounted pricing for youth runners and families
Some factors that influence the cost:
-
Location – Races in major metro areas like New York City and Los Angeles tend to cost more Smaller community races are usually very affordable.
-
Swag & Medals – Races that offer higher quality shirts or extra swag like hats and gloves cost more. Finisher’s medals also add to the expense.
-
Charitable Benefit – Many trots support a charity partner. You may pay slightly more, but it supports a good cause.
-
Race Distance – Longer distances like a 10K are sometimes $5+ more than the 5K option.
-
Extras – A few trots offer extras like post-race food and drinks that raise the entry cost a bit.
Group Discounts
Most turkey trots offer discounts if you sign up as a group or family. The more people you register, the lower your individual rate typically is. Some common turkey trot group discounts:
-
2-4 People – $2 to $5 off per person
-
5+ People – $5 to $10 off per person
-
Families – Children 18 and under half off or free with paying adult
Getting a group together can make your turkey trot more fun and save money!
Virtual Options
In 2020, many in-person turkey trots went virtual due to the pandemic. And even now many races offer “virtual” options for those who live outside the area or prefer to do their own run.
Virtual entry usually includes the race shirt and medal being mailed to you. Fees are often $10 to $15 cheaper than in-person without extras like timing chips or food/drinks. A great budget-friendly option!
Fundraising Options
Another way to reduce your turkey trot costs is by signing up as a charity or fundraising team member. Most races allow you to fundraise to help cover your race entry fee and further support the cause.
To qualify, you simply commit to raising a minimum donation amount, normally around $100 to $200. You can easily share a link with friends and family to collect donations and earn your race for free!
